Single / Rouge
There was some discussion about this play on whether it should have been a safety or a rouge. Even though the ball was touched by the receiving team on the field of play before going into the EZ, the touching is ignored. This is a kicked ball that goes dead in the Team B end zone. The officials CORRECTLY ruled single point. For a safety to be ruled, the receiving team would have had to have POSSESSION on the field of play.
EZ Clothesline
On this play there is a high hit to the passer above the shoulders. If you chose Roughing the Passer, hit above the shoulders, that would be a correct call. If you chose UR- Clothe-lining,(Rule 7 Sec 3 Art 6) that would also be a correct call. Either way, this high hit was correctly flagged by the Referee.
Legal Block Below the Waist
30 Legal Block inside This is a perfect example of what is legal. A7 lines up in the tight end lane on the left side. He moves to his right and the contact with the defender is where the “ghost” tight end would have lined up on the right side. This is a legal block.

Rule Change: Article 14 – Illegal Block, Hands to Face
No player of either team may thrust their hands forward above the frame to contact the opponent on the neck, face, head or facemask. A ball carrier to use a stiff arm to ward off a tackle but it cannot contact the head or neck area when doing so.
Receiver down on one knee
HL correctly whistles play dead as the receiver goes to one knee to make a catch. Remember only on kick plays can a receiver go to a knee(s) to catch a ball providing he IMMEDIATELY gets up to continue.
Roughing the Passer
R55 has plenty of time to avoid the hit on the QB. By the time R55 hits the QB, the QB’s arms are at his side. The Referee correctly penalized R55 for roughing the passer.
No Yards & UR
The covering official correctly penalizes R25 for BOTH No yards (15 yards) and UR defenseless player (15 yards).
Playoffs are upon us.
Teams are looking to do everything possible to win the game and we need to mentally and physically be ready for trick plays.
Quick Kick on 2nd down – is the crew ready? Who has the onside guys?
Punt Return with backward pass – are we in position to make that judgement?
Potential Sleeper Play
This video shows a potential Sleeper Play – Rule 1 Sec 12 Art 12 (d) (i) (a penalty may or may not occur here as the clip did not start early enough). Keep in mind:
- If the offensive team had a huddle after substitution, did H21 come from the huddle? If the answer is no, then we had an illegal sleeper play.
- If this was “No Huddle”, did H21 go into the field of play come past the “numbers”? If the answer is no, then we had an illegal sleeper play.
LOS officials, be aware of substitutions, especially in front of team benches.
